Where Is God When Disaster Strikes?

Psalm 88:1-18

Revelation 1:1-8

1. Natural disasters…

2005 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, Nepal Earthquake

2. Personal disasters

Sickness and disease
Disability and suffering

3. First we need to acknowledge that there is a problem, and it’s a BIG problem.

Suffering naturally generates a ‘why’ question in us – why does a good God let this happen?
We should take care never to ‘normalise’ the presence of suffering in God’s creation

4. Some things that we can say…

This world is a broken one, so we shouldn’t be surprised that all is not well.
A world of suffering needs hope… and a world without Jesus has no hope.
Our desire for something better helps us see we’re made for something better.
God is ever present, even in the midst of our pain.
God has suffered as we have – and so understands what we go through.
Part of the response is to see that we are called to a life of relational community.
