John 17:6-19 – Jesus Prays For His Disciples

Exodus 3:13-15

John 17:6-19

Who is Jesus praying ‘for’?
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
John 5:24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

What is Jesus praying for his disciples?
v11 Unity and protection in the holy Father’s name.
Jn 8:58 …I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born I am.
Ex 3:13-15 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say the Israelites, ’I AM has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name for ever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
v13 Joy
vv14-15 Kept safe from the evil one
vv16-19 Sanctified = Set apart for Holy use

What does this passage mean for us?
“Prayer: How to do nothing and still think you’re helping.”
Why bother with prayer?
Prayer: The practice of the presence of God
Pray aloud for the benefit of those listening
Pray for others more than ourselves
1 Tim 2:1,3-4 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone, … This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
John 6:37, 39 All that the Father gives me will come to me; and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
Set apart for God’s use alone
